The Floyd Central Cross Country team was coached by Don McWilliams
(who has coached the team from 1967-2001). McWilliams also has coached the distance
portion of the track & field team for many years. The new head Coach
for the Highlanders is FCCC alumni, Tim Korte. Korte ran for the team in the mid-ninties.
The program the highlanders run is geared toward building the best race
at the state meet. Many teams attempt to do speed early and not build up
respect for their seasons. This is not the practice of coach Tim Korte.
The main aspect toward running is based towards getting miles in in the winter,
and in the summer. In addition to these, running track is another nesesity.
The philosophy is to continue running year-round. The season is always
kicked off at one of the Indiana state parks for the year's Cross Country
Camp. This camp is geared just as much toward running as it is toward
team bonding. The week long camp begins near the beginning of August.
The season begins with hill work outs, and builds into long distance repeats.
These are in the range of 1600 m. or 800 m. The team then executes a series of
short distance sprinting repeats, as it enter the tournament series in October.
Finally the team has a two-week peak allowance that begins the weak of
semi-state to attempt bringing out that best race at the state meet.
