Woodturning

Updated May 30, 2000

Woodturning is a great hobby. With a little practice you can take an ugly piece of junk from the woodpile and make beautiful works of art or useful items such as bowls and platters. I have been turning wood for about 12 years but I am hardly an expert because I have so many other hobbies and committments that take up my time. I turn maybe four items a year, and give most of them away for gifts or the church auction.

However, I like to teach and I hope to eventually devote space on this site to teaching a bit about woodturning.

Woodturning is a lot like pottery, on a horizontal axis instead of vertical, and with wood spinning instead of clay. Mistakes are a little harder to fix in woodturning but part of the fun is seeing what you end up with, which may be quite different than your original plans.

I am a member of the Avalon Woodturner's Guild. We meet once a month and share our ideas with each other, have show and tell and watch videos and demonstrations about woodturning. We promote woodturning in the community and also have internal competitions. Members have anywhere from no experience to many years, so everyone fits in, and we always welcome new members.
